OUR MISSION
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (Amharic: የኢትዮጵያ ኦáˆá‰¶á‹¶áŠáˆµ ተዋሕዶ ቤተ áŠáˆáˆµá‰²á‹«áŠ•; translated in Amharic: Yäityop'ya ortodocs täwahedo bétäkrestyan) is the predominant Oriental Orthodox Christian church in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Church was administratively part of the Coptic Orthodox Church until 1959, when it was granted its own Patriarch by Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of All Africa, Cyril VI. It is not connected with the Ethiopian Catholic Church, a Chalcedonian church.
One of the few pre-colonial Christian churches of sub-Saharan Africa, the Ethiopian Church has a membership of between 40 and 45 million,[1] the majority of whom live in Ethiopia, and is thus the largest of all Oriental Orthodox churches. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is a founding member of the World Council of Churches.
Tewahedo (Ge'ez ተዋሕዶ) is a Ge'ez word meaning "being made one" or "unified". This word refers to the Oriental Orthodox belief in the one single unified Nature of Christ; i.e., a belief that a complete, natural union of the Divine and Human Natures into One is self-evident in order to accomplish the divine salvation of humankind, as opposed to the "two Natures of Christ" belief (unmixed, but unseparated Divine and Human Natures, called the Hypostatic Union) which is held by the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia article on the Henotikon:[4] the Patriarchs of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem, and many others,[who?] all refused to accept the Dyophysitism (two natures) doctrine decreed by the Council of Chalcedon in 451, thus separating them from the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox — who themselves separated from one another later on in the East-West Schism in 1054, although not over Christological views.
The Oriental Orthodox Churches, which today include the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Malankara Orthodox Church of India, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church, are referred to as "Non-Chalcedonian", and, sometimes by outsiders as "monophysite" (meaning "One Single Nature", in reference to Christ). However, these Churches themselves describe their Christology as miaphysite (meaning "One United Nature", in reference to Christ; the translation of the word "Tewahedo").
The Church was inaugurated on September 9, 2017

Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the Lord. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

MINISTRIES
Children's Ministry
The Kids ministry at St. John Baptist Ethiopian Orthodox Church is created with you and your children in mind. Our goal in every environment is to partner with you as you lead your child into a growing friendship with Jesus. We have designed each ministry area to be exciting, creative, fun, and to capture your child’s imagination—all to be a catalyst for a memorable, impactful, and applicable message each week!
Prayer and Care
Life is messy and often painful. There comes a time when we are faced with life’s challenges: loss, pain, and changes. None of us can avoid the grief and loss that happens in our lives. The way we respond will have an impact on our future.
The passion, mission, and vision of the Prayer & Care Ministry is to demonstrate the loving care of our Savior by ministering to those in need of comfort, care, support, and prayer. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 declares that Jesus comforts all of us in our troubles, so now we can partner with God and comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
Traditional Worship
Ours is an era of uncertainty. Upheaval – socially, politically, at home, and abroad – seems to be the standard for the day. For stability, we turn to religion and tradition. We keep tradition because it’s worth doing. Because it anchors us. Because it reminds us that we’re not alone.
To be part of Traditional Worship at St. John The Baptist Ethiopian Orthodox Church is to be part of an ongoing stream of worship: We use elements from the ancient church – the Apostles creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Gloria Patri, readings from the Old and New Testaments. Our songs include ancient hymns and current compositions, and we use modern technology to enhance our worship experience. Traditional is not a sentimental love for the past, but an acknowledgment that we are part of something much bigger than we are . . . and part of something eternal.
Groups
One of the best ways to get connected and grow your faith is to find a group, large or small, where you can safely share and explore your life experiences. Groups help build lifelong friendships by connecting us with people as we study God’s Word, by creating opportunities to go out in the world to show His love, and by having lots of fun together.
St. John The Baptist Ethiopian Orthodox Church has a wide variety of groups – there is something for everyone! We have Young Adults, Couples, Men’s, Women’s, Singles’, Sunday Morning, Bible Studies, and Special Interest groups. With small, medium and large-sized groups, there is absolutely a place for you to get plugged in.
